Protecting your Teak Furniture

May 11, 2023

Teak is one of the most durable and stable hardwoods in the world and thanks to its high density and natural oil content it is considered to be the best timber for use in outdoor furniture. It is naturally resistant to water and insect damage. Our outdoor teak furniture is manufactured to the highest quality standards and while it can remain perfectly functional if left unchecked, you can take steps to maintain the colour and protect it from staining. Teak beautifully silvers over time and this is a lovely process, teak protection and cleaning products will not prevent this process but will slow it somewhat and ensure that your wood is protected to last a lifetime.

We recommend the use of Teak Tonic as the natural ingredients are mixed by hand to help moisturise your F&E teak wood furniture and prevent ageing. The natural elements of organic beeswax, rosemary and tea tree oil carefully nourishes the finely handcrafted timber to seal in the grain and prevent mould and mildew while also protecting the wood from the elements.

Teak Tonic can assists in shielding initially and protect against stains. Easily apply a small amount with a clean dry cloth and allow to absorb for a few hours, once applied this will last a full year or use as required to highlight the natural grains and beauty of your outdoor teak furnishings.

With exposure your teak furniture will turn a silver-grey colour as the pigments in the surface of the timber fade away. This is normal and I love this look. If however you wish to restore the original honey-brown colouring of the teak it is relatively simple. Whilst there are oils and sealants made for teak, at Finn and Elder we always use Teak Tonic to naturally preserve our teak collections. I have used over the years on all my own outdoor teak products, it brings out the most natural colour and grains of the wood rather than a less natural and leave an unattractive orange colouring that some can.

If you prefer your teak to age naturally apply Teak Tonic initially and then watch it weather to a wonderful silver grey. Teamed with the right colour fabric this is such a classic look. My recommendation would be that the Tonic is applied as a rule in Spring each year as you bring out the furniture.  This doesn’t take long and is easily applied with a soft cloth just like rubbing it all down and brushing it off, a spring clean but always use your furniture covers when the furniture is not in use will also help keep it clean for when you need it and give added protection against the weather.
